Can a non-certified coder code medicare patients? I am having a debate with a few people and wanted to know this? I thought that a noncertifed coder should not be coding for medicare patients. Am I right or wrong?

Thank you

Hi,

I'd never heard that either. I looked throughout Medicare's website and couldn't find anything that indicated that either. Where did you hear about this? I'd be interested in reading about it.

I think this is a case of misstatement or misunderstanding of the MMA (Medicare Modernization Act). Actually it "required" CMS contractors to have certified coders available on staff.

Somewhere on this forum we've discussed it previously . . .
