Can a NP that does urology in the same practice as a MD specializing in nephrology bill charges for the same day? I am understanding that the NP is not a specialty so they cannot bill on the same day even if the visit is for a different reason. Most of our demographics of patients are Medicare. Thanks

An NP and an MD are different specialties, per CMS. The APRN is under the speciality for Nurse Practitioners, and the MD is under the nephrology Specialty. This is assuming you are billing under the Nurse Practitioner's NPI. It doesn't matter that the NP works in the same practice; there are no medical specialties for APRNS (except CNM and CRNA). You can attempt to bill both on the same day, but you'd have to show medical necessity for the two visits, and a -25 should go on one of the claims.
