I code/bill in a specialty clinic. We see more patients being referred by a nurse practioner. Can a Consult be billed with a nurse practioner as the referring physician?

Yes, as long as the provider meets the criteria of being an "appropriate source", they can request a consult (which makes them the referring physician, for billing purposes). However, you can only bill a consult, if there's a written request, and if your provider provides a response in writing, to the requestor...see the guidelines on page 18 of the CPT manual for more info.
