With the new obesity class codes, what is the difference between morbid obesity and class 3? How do we know which obesity code to use?

Ensure when provider defines obesity see dx blocks of E66 and hopefully current documentation list the BMI% to add to the claim too. BMI% is located in Z68 blocks. follow the documentation provided if it is not mentioned CANNOT code it. Class 3 means patient has over 40 % BMI so use dx E66.01 Morbid Obesity and dx Z68.40 but provider needs to state it or list in current med record. E65 ifs extra fat over main body organs but provider needs to state this in record.

Following, I use obesity codes daily so interested to see if AAPC puts anything out on this. The 2025 book still has a 'tip' in my AMA edition that says to code e66.01 when obesity class 3 is documented.
