I would like to know how another facility is charging for Infusions during Observation status time.

For observation patients that are receiving medication infusions via IV:

1. Is it OK to charge administration charges on any type of drug (96365, 96366, 96367, 96368) or can it only be drugs that require a higher level of care and active monitoring like heparin or potassium (aka: are antibiotics OK to bill the admin fee on)?

2. If we can bill the admin fee on drugs like an antibiotic, should we deduct that time from the observation time, or should a hospital charge the observation time and the drug administration fees simultaneously for drugs that do not require active monitoring?

Thank you so much!

Joan
