Is breast nodule coded 611.72 or 793.89? When you look up nodule, breast in dx code book it brings you to 793.89.

Thanks:-)

Depends on how it was detected....

611.72= A lump or mass in the breast can often be detected by hand.

793.89=Other abnormal findings on radiological examination of breast

I code for radiologists and find that I will use both of these for nodule, depending upon how it is described in the findings. If it sounds more like a mass then I go with 611.72. If it sounds like they see something on the mammo, but they are not sure what, I go with the 793.89. You can pretty much get a feel for their overall view of it when reading the report.
Hope that helps.
Heidi
