Our general surgeon has been doing on call coverage for other surgeons not in our practice group. For example, patient has surgery on 8/9 and our general surgeon does post op call coverage 8/13-8/19 and the primary surgeon assumes care on 8/20 until the patient is discharged. Since the two surgeons are not in the same practice and not billed under the same tax ID number, can we bill the post op call coverage for our surgeon as subsequent inpatient care?

covering

You can bill if you use the modifier 55 and bill the dates your doctor saw him. However, the other surgeon needs to do the same thing. I would check and see what the other group does. Normally if they cross cover, it works out that they don't bill each others patients.
