Ok, I have always coded a open area that is not an abscess, ulcer, ect...as an open wound. I have just been made aware that a wound is only a wound when it is an act of violence, injury or trauma. What is an open area on the breast considered that is not from any of those things and is not an ulcer or abscess. I work in a Home Care office and the nurse saw the patient and she has this area. The patient has bilateral breast CA and did not have treatment. I know this is probably a fungating carcinoma but the physician has not stated this and she is having bilateral lumpectomies to remove the cancer. He is just calling it a mass, but this does not explain being open and having dressing changes. I need a diagnosis code for the open area since the nurse saw it and is dressing it and looking after it until she has it removed. HELP!!!!!
