pt has selected Option 2 on ABN. Do I mark the insurance as self pay or leave it at Medicare?

Option 2: You want the items or services that may not be paid for by Medicare, but you don’t want your provider or supplier to bill Medicare. You may be asked to pay for the items or services now, but because you request your provider or supplier to not submit a claim to Medicare, you can’t file an appeal.

Since option 2 states that they do not have want Medicare billed, you will need to do what is appropriate in your office to ensure that a claim not be billed to Medicare. In our office, we would register the patient as Private Pay indicating that the patient has requested the insurance type based on the ABN and we would collect the monies in full at the time of service.
