I need help finding a code. This is inpatient. Patient admitted for kidney transplant due to hypertensive esrd. i can only find z94.0 transplant status but he has not had it yet that is why he is admitted. he has the transplant in the hospita. what should my principle diagnoses be?

I believe you would code the hypertensive ESRD as the admitting DX and then the transplant coding would come into play if/when the actual surgery is done and upon discharge. Although the intent is to do the transplant, there's no way to be sure it will actually happen during that stay, or at all for that matter. Even if the surgery is completed, the fact still remains that the admit was pre-possible-transplant.

The appropriate codes would be I12.0, N18.6 in that order. No transplant code needed until the transplant actually take place. hope this helps!
