Patient has established diagnosis of OA of knee but comes in because of chronic pain of knee as a result of the OA. Code both chronic pain and OA or just OA?

There's not enough information here to respond. Can you elaborate on the visit? Is there a procedure performed?

There are guidelines regarding how to code pain in Chapter 6 of the ICD-10 manual.

You can use the dx code of OA for the knee with chronic pain BUT it must be documented by provider "chronic pain" of DJD of knee. The catch is the provider must put document " chronic pain" with knee pain. Established pain is not enough & has differ meaning....the patient has had this illness but not giving the type of pain. So since the provider seems not to use CHRONIC PAIN of a OA knee, I d just cod it OA of the knee dx .Alos there is not Exlucdes1 rule in this situation either. Check out the ICD10 manual regs on using pain as dx it is very helpful.
