A patient recently had an I&D of the small finger proximal interphalangeal joint where it was thought the pt had infection, since it appeared the pt had "dishwater like fluid in the joint". Tissue samples were sent to pathology, which showed no growth for either aerobic and anaerobic tests. The doctor stated the pt had osteomyelitis, and also noted the pt had an osteolytic bone lesion.
For the osteolytic bone lesion, I decided to use M85.841 - "Other specified disorders of bone density and structure, hand" Is this the most appropriate dx code?
Since the culture results came up negative for infection, do I still code osteomyelitis?
