Wiki Other hyperlipidemia (E78.49)

Other hyperlipidemia (E78.49) mentioned in the medical report. Can we change it to E78.5?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

If a provider says "other hyperlipidemia" they should specify what that the "other" hyperlipidemia is.

If they don't provide that information, then I would code E78.5 hyperlipidemia, unspecified. I do not code "other" codes unless a provider clearly specifies what the "other" means.

Those codes are usually labeled "Specified NEC" (not elsewhere classified). It's only appropriate to use them when the provider has documented a specific type of hyperlipidemia that doesn't map to another code.

So do we change E11.8 to E11.9 (unspecified code) if type 2 diabetes mellitus with unspecified complications is documented in assessment by the provider? As per the guideline of risk adjustment, we should code a more specific diagnosis code. If we follow that guideline E78.49 is more specific than E78.5.
