Outpatient Lab Encounters - Diagnosis coding

In my prior role of outpatient coder, we were taught to code from provider encounters within the last year if documentation supports ordering lab work for a specific diagnosis(es). In my role of auditor now, I am trying to find documentation to support this practice, but I do not find guidelines to state this through many resources I have searched. Can anyone help with this please?
