Hi,

We are having some debates about the "/" in HCPCs and if it means "and" or "or".

P9057 Red blood cells, frozen/deglycerolized/washed, leukocytes reduced, irradiated, each unit.

Does that mean frozen AND deglycerolized AND washed since there aren't commas between them or does the slash mean frozen OR deglycerolized OR washed.

I appreciate any input.

Thanks!
Jamie

Hi Jamie,
I think it means "and" in this particular code, because once a unit of RBCs is frozen, it must be deglycerolized and washed prior to use. Having said that, it's strange to me that when you look at P9054, a similar product, they just used commas rather than dashes!

Also, there's a separate code for RBCs which have been washed only (P9022), for example.
