Alaska Medicaid has just informed me that they are no longer accepting the -AS modifier, but they will not tell me which modifier they are accepting for a PA assist at surgery other than "it is a number." From the research I've done the only thing I can find is that some third party payers will accept -81 when they do not recognize -AS.

Does anyone have any experience with this particular situation?

They have programmed their computers to only take the 80 modifier for assistant surgeons regardless if they are MD's or PA's.

The modifier 81 is when a minimum assistant surgeon is warranted. The modifier 82 is for facilities that have residency programs. Not sure what your situation is.

Thank you. I think I'll submit a single test claim and see what happens.
(Maybe I'll actually get a call back from them today too, but I'm not holding my breath.)
