Do I need to append a -81 in addition to AS when billing Medicare?

We bill our Medicare carrier with 82 AS. Check with your different carriers, some of our Medicare replacement plans want 80 AS, some just want AS.

Again, our Medicare carrier, replacements and commercial carriers require different things for the Physician Assistant. Our Medicare carrier wants 82 AS. One of our biggest commercial carriers requires 80 AS for the PA. I would also look on your Medicare carriers website to make sure that the surgery performed is one that they will pay for an assist on.

AS is the most commonly used and depending on the carrier you would use 80/81/82. Note that the 82 is for Teaching facilities who are enrolled in a GMA program. If you dont't fall under that, then use 80 or 81.
