Just curious when one would use this code versus coding pain in the specific body part. For example: if a patient falls and twists their ankle, do you code the pain in the ankle or do you code the pain due to trauma or can you code both? Thank you very much in advance for any help in clarifying this for me.

If you read the coding guidelines you see it states to code both. Unless a dx such as fracture or sprain is rendered then you would code neither in favor of the definitive dx.

From the guidelines:

"If the encounter is for pain control or pain management, assign the code from category G89 followed by the code identifying the specific site of pain (e.g., encounter for pain management for acute neck pain from trauma is assigned code G89.11, Acute pain due to trauma, followed by code M54.2, Cervicalgia, to identify the site of pain)."

Hope this helps

Nevermind, I found what I was looking for in the guidelines, not sure how I over looked that part before. My apologies. Thank you for your help though.
