Coding Specialist
Medical Coder / Coding Specialist / Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Job Description:
Responsible for reviewing claims that have been denied for a coding reason. Must be able to properly review hospital and physician claims and determine why a code (diagnosis, HCPCS, CPT, etc.) has denied and offer suggestions/corrections to be made on the claim based on LCD/NCD policies, individual insurance carrier medical policies and coding guidelines.
Duties Include:
* Research coding errors for denied claims
* Request changes to be made to a claim based on coding guidelines if appropriate
* Assist collectors with documentation to support appeals when necessary
Education:
* High School diploma or GED required
* Current CPC preferred
Experience:
* Minimum of 3 years coding experience.
Specialized Knowledge/Skills:
* Knowledge of medical terminology; ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS
* Strong written and oral communication
* Critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills essential
* Ability to multi-task and prioritize needs in order to meet timelines
* Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel preferred
