This was attempted in the office. * *IUD strings present at OS, IUD strings grasped with polyp forceps, the IUD was removed but one arm was missing. The cervix was then cleansed with betadine and despite multiple attempts at removal with a polyp grasper and a suction curette, the arm could not be retrieved. * * Pt will now go to surgery to remove the remaining arm.
Would this get a 52/53 modifier since not all of the IUD was removed?
 
Yes, a modifier would be appropriate to identify that the procedure was not completed at that time. You would want to ensure that the documentation clearly shows why the procedure was discontinued or incomplete as most carriers will request a copy of the medical records when modifier 52/53 is used.
