Hello,

Question, how can I code for a pathologist performing a test on a kidney biopsy while in the OR and then send it out for further testing. I was thinking 50200-26 for the pathologist, or can we only code from the Path CPT section for them.

Thanks for the help.

Our pathologists often will do a consult during an operative procedure to check margins, give an initial diagnosis, etc.; and we use 88329 for that. I'm not sure if this applies to your situation or not -- what "test" are you referring to?

As stated in the reply above mine. There are codes for pathology consultation during surgery 88329-88334

There are also codes for pathology in the lab, gross or gross & microscopic (88300-88309) Looking at the CPT guidelines, Codes 88300-88309 do not include services designated in codes 88311-88365 & 88399. If both services took place they can be reported separately.
