I am hoping to get some clarification when it comes to billing for red blood cell exchange procedures...
In the hospital outpatient clinic I code for there are sickle cell patients that come in for a red blood cell apheresis procedure (CPT 36512) and once the "bad" blood components have been removed during the apheresis procedure, the patient is then transfused with the good components that remain from the apheresis along with donor blood.
Would this be coded:
-CPT 36512 (therapeutic apheresis; for red blood cells) &
-CPT 36430 (transfusion, blood or blood components)
OR
Would this be coded:
-CPT 36512 (which includes the apheresis and transfusion of donor blood)
