Hello Everyone,

I have a physician that attempted a procedure patient went to into cardiac arrest while attempting to put in a wireless pacemaker. They were able to place a temporary pacemaker during this. The patient expired while on the table. Is anything billable due to the patient expiring?

Thanks

“… Modifier 53 might also apply if the provider must stop a procedure due to equipment failure or other extenuating circumstances (for example, the provider injures themselves while performing a procedure)…”

I hope this helps. I'm noticing that the use of the word ".... elects to discontinue.." can be confusing using the 53 modifier

https://www.aapc.com/blog/42008-know-the-difference-between-modifiers-52-and-53/

  • “…Submit CPT modifier 53 with surgical codes or medical diagnostic codes when the procedure is discontinued because of extenuating circumstances.
  • This modifier is used to report services or procedure when the services or procedure is discontinued after anesthesia is administered to the patient…”

“…Guidelines for claim submission and documentation:....."

  • Submit the length/amount of procedure completed and reason for discontinuing service in the electronic documentation field (or, if you are approved to submit paper claims, in Item 19)…”
