One of our providers is both a credentialed physical therapist, and a chiropractor. When we submit claims for 97140, manual therapy techniques, the claims are denied, because his primary designation is as a chiropractor. I looked at modifiers, but none of them seem to address this particular issue. This is physical therapy services, so a chiropractic code would not be correct. Do we need to submit a letter with each claim, explaining his multiple credentials, or is there a better way to get reimbursed for these services. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

I would suggest calling provider relations and asking them for a solution. I would think they could list him as dual specialties and resolve the issue.

Another thought would be to make sure the taxonomy code for PT is on the claim, and not the taxonomy code for chiro. Check with provider relations and see if that might solve the problem - frankly I doubt it will be that easy but you never know!
