I've posted this previously but have not gotten a response. I'm hoping someone can help me with this question.

Patient was sent to the ED from clinic 7/16. Physicians dictates admit note 7/17 but the patient is never moved out of the ED. Physician dictates discharge note 7/18. What place of service should I use for physician billing. 21 inpatient; 23 ED??
 
The patient's status is the determining factor here. Some ED's have a designated area for observation status or a patient may be held in the ED due to circumstances such as unavailability of a bed on a unit but have inpatient status. You should report the physician's face-to-face services and place of service based on the type of admission ordered (e.g., observation, inpatient).
