I am new to this specialty and have a question:
Patient had partial 2nd metatarsectomy and debridement of non healing ulcer done in Jan. On follow up visits has debridement of callus which he then states ulcer healed. Can this debridement be charged 97597? with 58 mod?

Any advise?

Podiatry Question

CBC,

Sounds like the callus removal should be coded as 11055 - PARING OR CUTTING OF BENIGN HYPERKERATOTIC LESION (EG, CORN OR CALLUS); SINGLE LESION. Also, the callus does not sound related to the procedure performed in January but it does fall within the global surgical period. I would append a 79 modifier (unrelated procedure or service by the same physician during the post op period). If Medicare or Medicaid I would apply their respective routine foot care policies.

I would not use the 97597 w/58 modifier, which is staged procedure and callus would not fall under staging. it is no longer a wound, and ulcer is healed. I would go to the codes of 11055 for paring or cutting of benign hyperkeratotic lesion. Worked in Podiatry for 4 yrs, so hopefully, this is correct.
