If doctor #1 performs the surgery, and doctor #2 (not in the same practice) who is on call for the #1 sees the patient for routine post op care within the 90 day global period, can doctor #2 charge anything for this visit?

Modifier 55 with the surgery code could possibly be billed by doctor #2, to indicate that he is performing the post-op care only. However, unless this situation was discussed and agreed upon by both doctors prior to the surgery, and doctor #1 billed the surgery with modifier 54, it will probably be hard to get paid; it is likely that doctor #1 has already been paid for the entire global surgery package. There is no agreement between them. Doc #2 was just covering for doc #1 for a brief period and saw the pt only once. Doc #2 is not going to continue to see the pt.

That's usually how it goes. I haven't been able to find a way to get around that, sorry. Hopefully someone else will have more info.
