Post-op pleural effusion has always been considered a complication to cardiovascular procedures & per guidelines (by STS) when a tube thoracostomy(32551) & thoracentseis (32422 & 32451) is performed we would bill with mod 78...assuming it was also done as a return to the OR or special trmt room. BUT it has come to my recent attention that my Doc's are doing these procedures at the bedside. This is a big red flag for me....and I'm looking for some additional input on this situation.

Does your docs perform these at bedside and are you billing 78 modifier for them?

There is also mixed interpretation as to whether pl.eff is a post op complication of cardiovascular procedures...how does your office and doc's view this? Thanks.....
