We have children who receives preop exams for their surgical dental work which would be done at a local hospital by one of our dentist. My question is would the preop exams be considered global? The provider who does the preop exams and the dentist who does the dental procedures work in the same group.

A lot of CPTs have either a 0, 10, 90 day global post op period with a 1 day preoperative period. There are guidelines based off of what CPT will be billed for the procedure.

Just to note, the global period only applies to the physician doing the surgery (or other physicians in that same practice who are of the same specialty). Services by other physicians of different specialties are never considered global. So if the physician doing the pre-op exam in this example is not a dentist, then it is not global. It is common for certain procedures to require a medical clearance from a PCP or other specialist to make sure the procedure will be safe for the patient - these can be billed and are not part of the global payment.
