I am looking for a protocol and/or procedure for steps to handling low work volumes such as taking the number of coders you have coding divided by the number of accounts to code. what do you do when volume dips low? Do you send coders on PTO first?

Thank you,
Sharon

It would all depend on your hospitals or companies policy. That would be the best place to look is at the policy because everyones policies are different.

Whatever your business policies says is primary of course. That said, the two most important things would be to find volunteers and to be consistent.

There might be parents who want some more time at home, or people looking to do their hobbies a little more. Keeps the goodwill if they're looking for an excuse to head home early and you have a "way out."

Consistency is important because no one likes a schedule that fluctuates wildly. If you commit to lowering hours, don't call people back in at random and don't send home at random. Try to have "group A" and "group B", A goes home early on Mon/Wed/Fri B goes home early Tues/Thurs/Sat.
