Our doctor was performing an open Hartmann procedure when the patient had uncontrolled bleeding. The stopped that procedure and focused on controlling the bleeding. Once bleeding was stopped they let the patient stabilize over night and the next day completed the procedure. I'm questioning how to bill a procedure that ultimately took 2 days. Day one was an incomplete procedure .. mod 52..but it did get completed so that modifier is not correct. Should I just bill the procedure as if done in 1 setting and use mod 22 due to the difficulty? I'm just not sure which way is best or if there is another option I'm not thinking of, I could really use some advise.

I would use -53 on the first procedure and then use the same code with -58 on day 2.

-53 Discontinued procedure

-58 staged or related procedure or service by the same physician or other qualified health care professional during the postoperative period
