Hello all,

Can any of you help me with this? Is "Routine Venipuncture performed by MA" sufficient documentation to bill for 36415? I do not believe so, but my supervisor does and I am trying to research examples of better documentation for this. I would say this is wrong anyway because it is not a "routine" venipuncture as the patient has a chief complaint of abdominal pain.

the "routine" part of the description means the skill level for taking the blood is that of a phlebotomist. It would be billed under the supervising physicians name. However many insurance companied do not pay for a 36415 on the same day as an E&M as they consider it bundled.

I know we have been having some problems with physicians billing the Non Routine venipuncture just because the physician did the blood draw, when in fact it didn't require the skill of a physician or they are misinterpreting what Routine means in this case.
