One of our docs performed popliteal and tibial laser atherectomies/Angio Jet thrombectomies, then had the patient come back later on the same day and performed popliteal and tibial PTA's. Can the PTA's in the second procedure be billed, or will they be included in the earlier procedure?

Thanks for your help!!

the quick answer is yes...but...it all depends on medical necessity. The physician must clearly document the reason for the return to the OR and additional procedures.

If medical necessity is met, you can bill, but you will likely need to append modifier 59.

HTH :)
