Hello Coders!

I have a question. We have been assigning 99354 & 99355 for our prolonged service codes with our 99205/99215 office visits. I am now seeing the prolonged service code 99417 to be assigned with an e/m. The descriptors are different but I am finding conflicting information on the internet. Would someone explain to me when to use the 99354/99355 and when to use the 99417? Also, it appears the G2212 has replaced the 99354/99355 codes for all prolonged services...

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Konda

Hi there, 99354-99355 still exist but effective 2021 they could not be added to office visit codes.

For some private payers you can report prolonged service code 99417 when a Level 5 office visit that was coded based on time meets the time threshold.

Please check your 2022 CPT manual for full descriptors time charts etc.

However, Medicare and some private payers require G2212 instead of 99417. G2212 has a higher time threshold but it has not replaced the other services in the prolonged service chapter.
