Are providers obligated legally to send their patients a letter stating that they are no longer able to provide care due to rejection by insurance?

There are legal requirements that providers must follow for discharging a patient from a practice, which include things like notification as well as ensuring the continuity of care and the patient's medical records. If you do an internet search for 'how to discharge a patient from your practice', you'll find many articles about this.

The laws can vary from state to state, so I'd recommend checking with a local attorney or with the medical associations in your state to make sure you're in compliance with the particular regulations where your practice is located.

To add to what Thomas said, the prospect of charges of patient abandonment is a very real thing.

Both our state Medical Board AND our malpractice carrier have articles and guidance regarding the proper way to handle the termination of the patient/provider relationship.
