Do we follow the time guidelines for the established patient codes for the Med Management service provided?

Somewhere my pscychiatrist feels that for 20 minutes she can only bill a 99212.
I disagree and would advise coding 99213.

Thought? Guidance? Comments!

Thanks,
Darcy Bohannon, CPC

Assuming you are billing the visit based on counseling time and the requirements for such are met:
You would indeed bill a 99213 for 20 minutes of total time spent with the patient.

The 2013 description states that typically, 15 minutes are spent with the patient for a 99213. Our psychiatrist usually sees patients for 15-20 minutes when doing med management. I'd be interested in seeing what others have to say as well. I'm pretty new to coding in general, and definitely new to coding E/M's for our psychiatrist.
