I would like to know if it is correct to bill a port flush (96523) when a patient comes in to be disconnected from their continuous infusion pump. The port is flushed with heparin and no other service is done on that same day. My only concern is if this fee is already considered to be worked in to the code for starting the pump and then the disconnect would be a no charge, regardless of the flush. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

The 96523 is not being reported in conjunction with any other services for the pump d/c visit, therefore it is appropriate. Unfortunately there is no better code at this time for the disconnect and flush of the port access site, so all we can get paid for is the 96523. Hope this helps, and good luck!
