Is there such a thing as putting credentials on inactive status like you can do in nursing?
 
Not that I'm aware of. I wouldn't ever let your certifications lapse, even if you think you won't use them again. You would have to start over.
We were just discussing this at our local chapter meeting. Someone spoke up and said she knew a girl who had let her credentials lapse because she was doing something else & didn't think she needed it anymore. An opening came up & she wasn't eligible because she was no longer certified. I would recommend keeping your certification(s) active no matter what.
