Question-Patient is seen at Urgent Care...Doc decides patient need to be sent to the ER....Can both location bill an E/M? In this case Urgent Care and Hospital is 2 different tax ID's but under same health system. Any thoguhts or regs would be helpful.:)

HI if your provider documented everything they did and spent time with the patient you can bill an E/M. I wouldn't though they are going to get a huge er bill. I would let it go and help them out.

Sorry LeAnne, but I disagree. If the pt was seen by one physician in the urgent care and a different physician in the ER and they are under different tax IDs, then they should both be able to bill for their services without problems.

If a patient was treated in the ER and the device used (heart monitoring devide)is not owned by the hospital, does it need a modifier. Also if the patient ended up being admitted can the device be billed separately.
