  • A three-year-old child is brought to the ER after swallowing a penny. A detailed history and exam are taken on the child and medical decision making is a moderate complexity. The child is admitted to observation for three hours and is then discharged home. What E&M would you assign?

I recently read that OBS can be anywhere, there is no designated area for OBS. I am not an expert but my thought is I would bill OBS EM because pt was admitted to OBS. There is a code for admission and discharge on the same day. If 2 different MDs, then 2 CPT: ED by md1 and OBS by md 2( different specialty). Again, I am not an expert.
