I have a patient that was discharged and later that came back and was re-admitted by same practice different physician. I cant find any recent information but do we bill this date a subsequent visit only? how do we determine that and who would get to bill it? thank for any help I can get and if you can give me a reference to where you found the information that would be much appreciated.

I am somewhat confused by your question. Was this re-admit the same day as the previous discharge? If not, than initial inpatient care codes should be used, billed under physician who actually did the work. If it was the same day, I would recommend Dr #1 change his code to subsequent hospital visit, and have Dr #2 charge prolonged attendance codes. I utilized the CPT guidelines in determining what codes to use.
