Is it compliant to allow registration staff to use an Icd 9 book or encoder or google to look up diagnosis???? Please help, I have an interim manager whom I am trying to explain that it is not compliant and puts us at high risk for misdiagnosing patients. This is why there are coders to make sure codes are going out properly.

Does anyone have any documentation regarding this??
 
I can't find any documentation showing that a registrar can't look up diagnosis codes. I would suggest showing the manager the guidelines in the front of the book, and explain that you as a CPC have been trained to utilize them. Good luck.
 
look in the coding guidelines in Section II Selection of Principle Diagnosis and see if that helps
