We recently had a physician attend a seminar on remote monitoring/billing and he came back with several questions. This physician was told that he could batch bill the 93296 cpt code which is the technical service for remote monitoring (because the monitoring was done over a 90 period of time). The way he explained it is he could bill all of the patients that he is monitoring remotely on one set date...

An example of the billing would be patients are monitored during January 1- March 31 and billing for all patients followed remotely would be billed with a date of service of 4/1/10. Does anyone bill this way? If so what's the advantages and disadvantages of billing this way?

Thanks,

Remote Monitoring

We bill this code in our clinic. We bill the date performed. Patients can have this done every 90 days. The following article may be helpful. If your doctor is interpreting all the tests on one date, this might be where he is getting that info. I've included a portion of the release, but it doesn't go into effect until 7/1/10. Hope this helps.

Date of Service (DOS) Codes
Look at the CMS release:[/B]
Place of Service (POS) and Date of Service (DOS) Instructions for Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests
Reference: Trans. 1873, CR #6375, Pub. 100-04, MLN: MM6375
Published Online: 12/23/2009

As of July 1, 2010, Medicare contractors will consider, and providers must remember, that the appropriate DOS for the professional component is the actual calendar date that the interpretation was performed. For example, if the test or technical component was performed on April 30th and the interpretation was read on May 2nd, the actual calendar date or DOS for the performance of the test is April 30th and the actual calendar date or DOS for the interpretation or read of the test is May 2nd.
