Hi, I'm still new to ortho coding and was looking for help with a dx used with 20680. Our Doctor only gives a Dx of painful hardware in the ankle. I was wondering what would be the proper Dx for this and should you also use the code V54.01 with a code for the painful hardware ?

I use the v54.01 in conjunction w/ the dx used for the placement reason ie: open distal IP fx so : 816.12, V54.01 w/ CPT 20680 if this is the only CPT you are billing for, otherwise I use that dx code alone as long as the 20680 is not my primary CPT code. Or there are hardware complication codes that are available such as in the 996.xx series

When the hardware was a planned removal I use V54.01. But when the hardware needed to be removed due to pain I use 996.78, which includes "pain due to presence of any device, implant...".
