When coding/billing for craniosynostosis reconstruction is it appropriate to bill for removal of previously placed tissue expanders? It seems to me that would be inclusive to the primary procedure such as 21175 but this physician wants to bill it every time.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Removal of tissue expanders

The expanded description of CPT 11971 reads in part: The physician removes a subcutaneous tissue expander without placing a prosthesis or performing final reconstruction. (emphasis added by FTB)

So, no ... if you are doing the ultimate repair (i.e. CPT 6155x) in the same operative session, you would not code for the removal of tissue exapnders.

Hope that helps.
