Hello all,

An associate of mine has a new biller at her facility who wants the surgery coders to start appending a modifier for repeat services on surgical pathology when more than one unit of the same code is reported [eg: 88302 x 2].

She said no one working there has ever added the modifier and no other biller has ever requested it. I code a little pathology but not enough to consider myself knowledgeable in it and don't want to give her bad advice...does anyone know if this is appropriate reporting of surgical pathology?

Thanks in advance...

repeat modifiers

if they are on the same path report, and are going to be billed as 88305 x 2 for example, then no modifier is needed. if they are going to be on separate lines, say 88305 x 1 and 88305 x 1, then yes, a modifier ('X") series, will be needed.

hope this helps.
