Hello!

We had a new situation for me in the office with coding a residual/retained foreign body - shot gun pellets. It was an injury almost 20 years ago, so it isn't a current GSW. It was the only reason for the encounter.

I'm torn between codes Z18.12 - nonmagnetic metal fragment vs the NEC code. Or am I missing something? I'm honestly surprised I can't find a specific code for this since ICD-10 is so exact.

Thanks! :)

S90.559(D) Superficial foreign body, unspecified ankle
Z18.12 - nonmagnetic metal fragment.
S99.81 - Other specified injuries of ankle
Y23.1XXS - Hunting rifle discharge, undetermined intent, sequel.
