I found quite a few posts on the case of retained placenta and surgical removal, but I was hoping for advice on this one. 59160 does not state "Suction" or "dilation" so I don't feel that is the correct code. Patient delivered 5/27 and had suction D&C for removal of retained placenta 6/18. Other notes show 58120, but that states (nonobstetrical). What would be correct in this situation? Thank you!

59160 is correct.

Question:

What is the appropriate code to report for a suctional D&C of retained placenta after the delivery?

AMA Comment:

From a CPT coding perspective, it would be appropriate to report CPT code 59160, Curettage, postpartum, for the D&C of the retained placenta.
