I have an interesting case that I need help with.

During a 32551, there was incidental breakage of a " peice" from a heavy stainless steel clamp with suspected intrathoracic location. Retrevial was unsuccessful.

Return to O.R. later that day and did a 32601 with a mini thoracotomy and retrevial of foreign body.

Can the surgeon bill for the return to O.R.? modifer 78? thanks!

Yes the additional procedure can be billed and yes use the modifier 78.

You may want to check with the hospital to see who to send the bill to on things like this. Broken equipment usually get the risk management at the hospital involed.
