Good day. I have a question regarding coding for routine eye exams for a patient that also has diabetes. Does the diabetes diagnosis have to be included as a diagnosis--report routine diagnosis and then the diabetes diagnosis? Or is only the routine diagnosis required for the routine exam in this instance?

hmm, i am not an expert but if i had such a note, i would make prim- routine eye exam Z01--- and if md documents significance of E119 like monitoring, assessing pt for it, making extra steps/service, then i would add E119. I read the article ( 90% sure) that if pt has E11.9 and cataract, then coded as linked Unless MD documents that they are not linked. i was surprised by it but it was a good reminder that E11.9 affect a lot of organs. My recollection.
